Internal Family Systems (IFS)

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?

Internal Family Systems therapy, developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, is a compassionate and integrative approach to therapy that explores the inner dynamics of the mind. IFS differs from other therapies in that it is not based on will-power or exerting lots of effort to change, or what is known as top-down processing. Rather, IFS gets to the root and core of the different parts of ourselves, affecting change at a deep level, and that change is manifested naturally in our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. What you may have been trying to change for years through effort and hard work could be done in as little as a moment of healing, understanding, and compassion for a part of yourself.

IFS is based on the belief that within each individual, there exists a complex system of "parts" or subpersonalities, each with its own unique thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. These parts often develop as a result of past experiences and serve different protective roles.

IFS therapy focuses on understanding and nurturing these parts, fostering a sense of self-leadership and harmony within the individual's internal system. It aims to help individuals develop a greater understanding of themselves, resolve inner conflicts, and achieve healing and personal growth.

How Does IFS Therapy Work?

In IFS therapy, the therapist works collaboratively with the client to explore their internal world and the relationships between their various parts. The therapist creates a safe and non-judgmental space for the client to engage in self-exploration and gain insight into their inner dynamics.

During sessions, the therapist helps the client identify and understand their different parts, including the protective roles they serve and the emotions they carry. The therapist guides the client in developing a compassionate and curious attitude towards their parts, fostering an empathetic relationship with each one.

As the therapy progresses, clients learn to recognize and access their "Self," which is considered to be the core essence or true nature within each person. The Self is characterized by qualities such as wisdom, compassion, and calmness. By connecting with their Self, individuals can develop a sense of inner balance and make conscious choices that align with their values and desires.

Through IFS therapy, clients can work towards resolving conflicts and healing wounds held within their internal system. The process often involves:

Unburdening parts: Helping parts release burdens, such as painful emotions or limiting beliefs, that they may carry from past experiences.

Developing self-leadership: Assisting clients in strengthening their Self's capacity to lead their internal system, making decisions from a place of clarity and compassion.

Fostering internal collaboration: Encouraging parts to communicate and work together, creating a cohesive internal system that supports the individual's well-being.

Integration: Facilitating the integration of parts with the Self, allowing for increased self-awareness, self-acceptance, and personal growth.
