WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

Almost everyone has feelings of sadness or “depression” at certain times. But these symptoms become a concern when they extend for several weeks and increase in their severity.

Depressed mood, negative or unwanted feelings, and loss of interest in life can negatively impact all areas of an individual’s life, including their daily living: working, concentrating, and even eating and sleeping.

If you are experiencing depression, you may be experiencing some of these symptoms:

  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, helplessness, or hopelessness
  • Feelings of sadness, irritability, or anger
  • Depressed mood
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities
  • Weight or appetite changes
  • Sleep challenges/ disturbances
  • Decreased energy
  • Changes in sexual desire
  • Thoughts of death or plans related to suicide
  • Difficulty with concentration or decision-making
  • Social isolation or social withdrawal

What causes depression?

Genetic, chemical, biological, psychological, social and environmental factors may contribute to the onset of depression. Major life stresses, significant life transitions, the death of a loved one, the loss of a job can bring about the onset of depression. The arrival of a newborn baby may create a paradox of exhilaration and exhaustion, and can be a challenging time for a Mom, whether she is welcoming her first child, third child, or adopting a child. The “Baby Blues” can affect 50-75% of all new Moms. But if those symptoms continue for longer than two weeks, Mom may be experiencing post-partum (post-natal) depression, or a post-partum mood disorder (PPMD).

Depression is treatable and counselling can assist in the healing process. If depression is not treated, it can worsen, and it may last for a long time.
