Benefits of Mindfulness-based Approaches
Research highlights that mindfulness is an effective strategy to manage negative emotions, anxiety, depression, and pain.Mindfulness-based approaches aim to alleviate the symptoms of psychological stress, negative mental states, and physical pain. Mindfulness can act as a grounding and relaxation technique. The approach can equip clients with the skills to manage negative emotional experiences (i.e. anxiety or anger) or to cope with overwhelming memories, emotions, and thoughts. In addition, research suggests that it is an effective treatment for depression.
Mindfulness-based approaches commonly take the form of mindfulness meditation, of which there are many types. The individual directs their focus on the present moment. When our focus and thoughts wander from the present moment, the individual takes note of those thoughts and brings their attention back to the present moment again, without judgement. It is beneficial to recognize these emotions, thoughts, body sensations, or urges associated with these meandering thoughts. It provides the individual with an opportunity to see the themes and patterns associated with their thoughts, and the opportunity to notice when our thoughts or ruminations are overwhelming. We can identify these thoughts as mental events, rather than controlling us. Evaluating such effects and obstacles experienced in daily life with a psychologist can assist in understanding thoughts and behaviours and ultimately working towards change.
Mindfulness can be challenging. Beginners may find that their thoughts are soon be plagued with various negatives beliefs, such as “my mind is too busy/ wild to learn this”, self-doubt, and judgement. Practicing with a guide can assist with these challenges, and help you to successfully adopt this beneficial practice.
